A kitchen remodel runs in stages, and each one has to finish before the next can start. Demo comes first, then the rough work behind the walls, then cabinets and counters, then the finishes you actually see. The honest answer on how long yours takes depends on the size of the kitchen and how much you're changing, so let me walk you through what happens and what moves the schedule.

What are the stages of a kitchen remodel?

Every kitchen I do follows the same basic order, whether it's a small galley off Riverside Drive or a full open-concept job out in Sango.

  • Planning and ordering. Before I swing a hammer, I lock down the layout, cabinets, counters, and fixtures. Cabinets especially can sit on order for a while, so I try to have them in hand before demo starts.
  • Demo. Old cabinets, counters, flooring, and sometimes a wall come out. This is fast and loud.
  • Rough-in. Plumbing, electrical, and any framing changes happen while the walls are open. This is where a good crew earns its keep, because it all hides behind drywall later.
  • Drywall, paint, and flooring. Walls get closed up and finished, and flooring goes down.
  • Cabinets and counters. Cabinets get set and leveled, then the counter template gets made and the tops come in after.
  • Finishes and punch list. Backsplash, plumbing fixtures, appliances, trim, and the small stuff. Then I walk the whole thing with you.

The order matters. You can't template a countertop until the cabinets are set, and you can't set cabinets until the walls and floor are done.

What makes one kitchen take longer than another?

The scope is the biggest thing. If we're keeping the same layout and swapping cabinets, counters, and finishes, that's a tighter job. The minute we start moving a sink, relocating a range, or taking out a wall, we've added plumbing, electrical, and sometimes framing to the schedule.

Material lead times matter just as much as the work itself. Semi-custom or custom cabinets take longer to arrive than stock. Stone counters need a template made in your kitchen, then time to fabricate before install. I plan around those gaps so my crew isn't standing around waiting.

Older Clarksville homes add their own wrinkles. A lot of houses near downtown and in the older parts of town have plaster walls, out-of-square framing, or wiring that needs updating once we open things up. Can I use my kitchen during the remodel?

For most of it, no. Once demo starts, the sink, range, and counters are gone, and the water and power in that room get shut down at different points during rough-in.

What I can do is help you set up a temporary spot. A lot of folks move the fridge, a microwave, and a coffee maker into the dining room or garage and get by that way. If you're a family with kids, plan for takeout and paper plates during the stretch where the kitchen is fully torn up.

I keep the mess contained as best I can. Plastic on the doorways, dust control running, and cleanup at the end of each day. It's still a construction zone, but it shouldn't feel like the whole house is one.

How do I keep the project on schedule?

The single biggest thing you can do is make your selections early and stick with them. Cabinets, counter material, tile, fixtures, hardware. When those are decided and ordered up front, the job flows. When they're still being picked halfway through, everything behind them waits.

Change orders are the other schedule-killer. Deciding to move the island or add a wall of cabinets after demo is fine, but it resets part of the timeline and often means reordering. I'll always tell you straight what a change does to the schedule before you commit to it.

On my end, I sequence the trades so the plumber and electrician aren't tripping over each other, and I try to have the next material on site before I need it. That's the part you pay me to manage, and it's where a lot of remodels go sideways when nobody's watching it.

What should I do before the first day?

Clear out the kitchen and anything in the path we'll be using to get material in and out. Empty the cabinets, box up the pantry, and figure out where the fridge is going to live for the duration.

Think through how you actually cook and move in a kitchen. Where do you want the trash to land, where does the coffee setup go, which side of the sink do you dry dishes on. Those small details are what make a finished kitchen feel right, and it's easier to build them in now than to wish for them later.
